SATIRICAL ART

Pawel Kuczynski a polish artist has specialized himself doing satirical illustrations. This has lead to nearly hundreds of prices and distinctions since he started out in 2004. The subject around his work is mainly about poverty, greed, politics etc. It is not only the quality of the illustration I like, but also his humors take on different social settings and the way to communicate his story without using any text

TINTYPE PHOTOGRAPHY

Michaeal Shindler, co founder of Photobooth talks about his gallery, store and his unique photobooth concept. He also speaks about his view on the modern photography and how things are currently changing. As we see more and more people appreciate the old way of taking pictures, were photography was as much about the process as it was about making a final product. I believe people are getting a lot more interested around photography and how real photos are produced. Maybe thats why Cool Hunting decided to include this video as their contribution to 99% Conference last week. But still there are far to many looking at the picture that just popped up on their iPhone, with a instragram filter, thinking they could easily been a photographer. I think this video reflects on that and also how to put value on the work and also aprecciating the photos as valuable objects and not just something you take a quick glimpse at on your Facebook feed

Eye catching advertising from Plant for the planet. Lorenzo Duran, who specialized in making art out of leafs, was commissioned by advertising agency Leagas Delaney Hamburg for this campaign. Lorenzo`s workflow is often spread over several days has he picks certain leafs, washes it, dries it and then start cutting with accuracy and precision like a highly trained surgeon. Take a look at his website for more leaf art cuttings

BROOKLYN NETS LOGO

This week the “new” establishment for the 2012-13 NBA campaign, the Brooklyn Nets launched their new logo. The logo is quite different from any other NBA team, with a black/white approach replacing the well known gradient colored, 3D logo. The logo is reportedly designed by the Nets part owner himself, Jay Z. The minimilastic, bold and street inspired logo sets the tone for the rest of the merchandise and also breaths a bit of fresh air thru the arrays of colorful and “childish” logos, that is spread across the sports arenas in the US. Even though the typography could easily been improved (some say its an embarrassment), I guess the “designer” focuses on the final look rather then the technically issues. Maybe its just the retro ragging thats been going around lately, but its clean, different and it also represents the Brooklyn underground movement quite well. I like it

FRANÇOISE NIELLY

I`ve been blogging for around 2 months now and I suddenly realized that I have not mention my admiration for Françoise Nelly`s remarkable paintings. The use of fluorescent colors mixed together with a more pastel palette, really sets a mark on her variety of portraits. All tough her portraits is often pictured with a sad or serious tone, the colors, thick layers of paint and hard strokes makes a vivid tone and the contrast between the shadows and light makes the portraits come to life in truly vibrant way. Even though it can be hard to separate the different paintings, its hard to be critical of her work. Truly one of my top favorite artist. See how she is working here

JELLY BEANS PORTRAITS

Painter and illustrator Kristen Cumings was hired by Jelly Jelly Belly to produce several pieces for their Jelly Belly Masterpieces of Confectionary Art. Each painting took about 50-60 hours to complete and contains approximately 9,000 – 12,000 jelly beans. The result is quite remarkable

WINTER IS COMING TO AN END

On my way back to Bergen from Oslo, I came across this boat, lying alone in the middle of a large valley surrounded by snow and dead grass. As I am looking forward to some warm days in the sun, I guess the boat feel the same way…

WIRE MESH PORTRAITS

Korean sculptor Seung Mo Park creates stunning portraits out of several layers of wired mesh, cut and put together. This impressive piece of work is not just breathtaking cause of the final result, but also I really like the innovation of using several layers creating the final piece, and also the remarkable use of material. In the video you can see how Park master the process from start to finish

MISTER X

This week my good friend Martin Lothe received the well respected design award “Merket for God Design” in Norway. His contribution was his final BA project from KHIB, which is a new schoolbook in maths. The book is made to explain different mathematics formulas with photos, illustrations and the traditional words, making it more easy for people struggling to understand math. Including myself. Big applaud!

HOLI FESTIVAL

I recently became aware of the traditional festival in India, called Holi after watching an old episode of “An idiot abroad”. When I was done laughing at Karl Pilkington`s frustration over his ruined shoes, I realized that this festival had a lot more to offer in terms of beautiful visualizations and a great mixture of blended colors together with happy people and smiling faces. Since the show (An idiot abroad) mainly focused on Karl`s attempt to rescue himself from the enormous crowd of people and the colored powders swirling around him, I was not able to see the full potential of the pictures which I knew was there to be taken. Luckily I found some great images on boston.com that was just what I had expected when watching the show. Why Sony never used this for their Bravida commercial, I`ll guess we`ll never know…
